Did You Resolve to See More Of Me This Year?

The same is true if you resolved to drink more, see more naked girls, and lose weight (hey, pole dancing is great exercise!)

Original Cyn is extra sinful with Metal Monday's NIK SIN hosting the insanity! You've had four whole days to recover from New Years Eve, now it's time to break in your new resolutions with performances by

JENNY C'EST QUOI
JEZEBEL TWIST
MISS MARY CYN
ROSIE 151

Where will this amazing night take place? 10pm at the Lucky 13 Saloon of course! 273 13th Street, right off 5th avenue in Park Slope, Brooklyn. F train to 4th and 9th stop, and walk just a few short blocks for a FREE show and notorious after party.

See you there!

Original Cyn Burlesque is produced by Miss Mary Cyn and Joe the Shark.

Resolutions/goals/whatever

Things I want to do in 2010

Paint more: There's a series I started years ago and want to finish and put on display in 2012/13. To do this I'll have to finish an average of one painting every two months. It won't be easy but I think I can do it.

Keep taking better care of myself: More veggies, more baths, more exercise. I'm trying to frame this all as luxury. Delicious veggie recipes welcome!

Make more/better money: Smitty recently became a freelancer (anyone looking for small business advice, let me know!) so money is a bit more of a concern than it already was. BUT I've been getting booked for better paying side gigs. Slipper Room has me booked three times this month and I'm shooting giant porn again in a couple weeks. I've also started shooting with RV again and taken on a more steady domming client. In the meanwhile I'm interviewing people about different industries I'm interested in and hoping that leads to a day job that I actually enjoy *fingers crossed*

Spend less time on the internet: Or at least less time mindless clicking back and forth from e-mail to twitter to lj to facebook. There are better things to do with my time, I'm pretty sure of it.

My goal for writing is to get the novel polished and start querying agents. I'm also going to try and write and submit as many short stories as I can. If you know of good places to fins call for submissions, let me know.

My goal for performing is to continue diversifying. I'm getting better at storytelling and doing it has made my teaching/public speaking better. It also helps inspire those short stories I was talking about. I'm burlesquing a good amount and am trying to force myself to do less new acts in favor of creating more polished costumes and less stress. Since I'm now performing in actual light it's time to invest in more lavish costumes and sparkleies.

I would like to say I'll post more but that really mostly depends on how my job situations pan out. I'll do my best darlings!

Quotes:

Jo Boobs: Today makes sense now! I love blaming things on my body. Anyone have a tampon?
Minnie Tonka: I do! This was Nasty Canasta's tampon.
Jo: Is it used? Is it signed?!
Quotes:

2009 Review

My LJ has not been nearly as detailed as it has been in previous years so I'll have to give you the broad strokes.

At the start of the year I was unemployed, broke, scared, not really sure what the hell to do with my life. But I was also working on a novel... yeah, that's pretty much it.

BUT I got a crappy job and then a slightly less crappy job.

I started storytelling and performing OMG SO MUCH burlesque. I performed in burlesque shows, parties, clubs, fundraisers, warehouses, a wedding, Paddles, a book launch, cony island and probably other places that I can't think of. OH! Most notably, I performed at the Slipper Room, which is pretty much the only well known burlesque venue in the city (Except for maybe The Box and I've only heard...um... less than favorable things about it.)

I created and performed a full length solo show with the help of Cyndi Freeman and Peter Aguero. The audience LOVED it and I'll be performing it again in January.

I finished the first draft of the novel. Now to work on revisions and short stories.

I taught at TES Fest, TES, and in Chicago. Will look into teaching more because, hot damn, I really dig it and the last time I taught I knocked it out of the goddamn park. I'm still keeping my toes in the kink world, doing modeling and sessions here and there. I'm not much for public play at the moment. Still not sure how I feel about that. I just took on a regular client, which I'm very jazzed about and a former client that I had major chemistry with resurfaced. We're talking about being play partners but, well, I'll have to find the time first.

I visited New Orleans and Chicago. Both were great. I'm looking forward to spending more time in Chicago.

I moved in with Smitty. It's been five months and things just keep getting better and better.

I made some awesome friendships. I can't stress this enough. But I've blathered on about it a lot already.

It hasn't all been candy canes and rainbows. I've had some personal issues that I'm working out in therapy. It's hard work and when you start it things kinda have to get worse before they get better. My main job is at best boring and at worst utterly soul crushing. My other job is mostly frustrating with glimmers of doing good. Some people have moved out of my life, which hurts but is for the best.
There's no silver lining for Flagg dying. He was the first close friend who's died in my life and I miss him dearly.

So, yeah, that all sucked. It's been a really rough year but it's also been good in a hell of a lot of ways and I'm trying to focus on that. I hope everyone else had a good year. I'm looking forward to continuing the upward climb in 2010.

Counting all my blessings

Despite its rather dubious background, I think thanksgiving is a great holiday, if only because people *should* stop and think about what they're thankful for because it's far too easy to focus on what one doesn't have. Hell, I think they should have MORE thanksgivings.

In a lot of ways it doesn't seem like I have that much more than I had last year. My life is far from fixed. My main assets are still my friends, my family and myself. But those assets are all richer, deeper, stronger. So here we go.

I'm thankful for Smitty. I have no idea where I'd be without him. He helped me get a job, keep my apartment, keep my sanity. More than anything he's believed in me and helped me believe in myself. Also, he makes me laugh. I am so freaking lucky.

I said this all on my birthday but, wow, my social support system has gotten better. I have more friends, better friends and closer friends. For that I am infinitely grateful.

My parents are the same wonderful and supportive nuts they've always been.

And I'm still flawed but a lot less broken. I'm a lot more focused and possibly even more productive. Thank, freaking, god.

Boosting the Signal

Lee Harrington wrote this post and I'm reposting it to boost his signal. I'm also kind of posting this as a note to myself because it's very similar to what I want and need and it's pretty cool to see someone else word it so well and give me clues on what to look for and a few ideas of things I can do on my own to make things a little easier.
More importantly, though, Lee is an awesome guy with a great career and in many ways I want to be him when I grow up. This is a very small way I can help him be as awesome as he wants to be. Here is a link to the original post if you have helpful comments to give.

So, in the past few months I have come to realize in a VERY real sense that I need a manager/agent/business partner. I tried last year to hire an assistant. I don't want/need an assistant at this time.

I write my own stuff.
I teach my own classes.
I answer my own emails.
And paying someone to do my laundry isn't a good fit right now.

What I do need is a human who:
-Can look at my 100+ ideas and concepts and projects and have an objective eye (not over-stating, seriously- need to update that excel spreadsheet)
-Can tell me (and that I can give power to to be able to) to focus on the stuff I need to do
-Can help me plot a trajectory from this mass of ideas
-Can hire individuals for projects and manage them
-Can figure out how to make the business model viable, manage finances, and wrangle LLC stuff, liscencing, etc.
-Can write grant proposals *and* bank borrowing proposals/business plans
-Gets my vision
-Understands that sometimes there are things that I *have* to do for spiritual reasons
-Will tell me to go to sleep and work on it later
-Can find gigs, book them, and help me negotiate such things or negotiate them for me
-Can tell me to stop taking gigs so I have time to do work that makes more money or helps the trajectory better
-Who gets that my plan for world domination does not stop at the kink community
-Who understands the concepts of kink and sexuality enough to not look at me strange when I think there may be a market for this one thing... and can argue pros and cons with each thing (or hear out my arguments with a degree of objectivity)
-Is not using my work as a way to launch their own career
-Who wants to be part of making Passion And Soul the kick ass brand it needs to be
-Who can laugh and be with me socially

So yeah, I'm dreaming/planning/visioning out loud. I keep laughing that I'm looking for a K. (referring to SJ's partner/manager/wrangler/roadie). The romantic partner part is not part of the requirement, though I admit that there is a quiet piece of me that wants that too. Someone with the above skills who I am also emotionally/sexually compatible with? That would be amazing.

But either way- consider this being me boosting my signal. If folks know I am looking for a manager/agent/business partner, maybe in their journeys they will meet someone and go "OMG you NEED to meet Lee Harrington," and magic can happen.

I dream, I plan, I see the vision and I make it my will manifest. Watch me weave magic (aka boost my signal).

Happy Birthday to Me

It's tempting when a birthday rolls around to ask what one has learned. But, for this birthday at least, it feels more appropriate to ask what I am learning. Thinking of my life as a ladder to be climbed has proved detrimental to my enjoyment of it. and has made mistakes, missteps and downright falls all the harder. Instead I think it's better to think of life as a practice, like yoga; some days you're tighter than others. There is no worked for perfection, merely a meandering journey of progression. This is not an easy outlook to hold on to. It's one of the things I'm learning.

I'm learning to expand my network of trust. It's not wide but it's wider and I hope it will continue to expand. As I learn to lean on more people when I need to, I'm becoming more discerning about who I urn to for support and under what circumstances. A lot of the pain in my life has come from expecting things from people that they're just not equipped to give me and though it hurts sometimes to acknowledge that you can't depend on someone for everything (or, in some cases, anything) it's much more healthy to do so and not keep banging my head against "If they really cared about me they'd..."

I'm learning to find where my boundaries are and when and where I can or should push them. I'm learning that I should be kinder to myself but I'm not really sure of where to start. I've seen people be kind to themselves in the wrong way, and I'm terrified of doing that. I'm learning how to figure out what I want. I'm learning to see and accept the reality of a situation, which is all that patience actually is.

The other temptation of a birthday is to measure how far I've come which is kind of at odds with viewing life as a practice. There are some changes in my life that I'm happy with, though. I'm living with Smitty and very happy about that. I totally didn't see that coming. I'm performing a hell of a lot more. Still not enough to live off of but I'm slowly learning what will get me there. I wrote a novel, one I'm very proud of, even if it's only a first draft. I wrote and performed a one woman show, my first since college. The reaction I got far exceeded my expectations and I'm really happy with it.

My life is a work in progress. I guess it always will be. But I have a clearer vision of what I'm working toward. And I think I'm on the right track.

With the exception of a rehearsal for my one woman show (it went swimmingly) and a slightly last minute performance at an art party with Rev. Burke Heffner, I spent the whole damn weekend cutting out costume pieces.

I never used to use patterns, partly because they're a bit on the expensive side, partly because I didn't know where the hell to find them, but also because following a pattern meant actually admitting to the fact that I was sewing. I didn't want to sew. I never wanted to be a desinger. My parents are designers. I was supposed to be the director/performer/writer to our one family theatre company.

But, somehow, growing up with designers, living with designers, talking about the theory and practice of design all the time I proved to have something of a knack for it in college. I enjoyed it too... in a way. I loved designing, I liked shopping (to a point) and I hated sewing. I tried to avoid it as much as possible and I told myself that if I wasn't using a pattern, I wasn't sewing I was just... jerry-rigging with fabric.
Eventually I realized that I was just driving myself crazy re-inventing the wheel.

So now I finally admit it. I sew. Just like my mom does. Just like I never learned from my mom in 17 years of opportunity.

*sigh* Better late than never, I guess.

I Shall Not Look Upon His Like Again

It's been at least 12 hours since I found out and I still don't know what to say.

Flagg is dead. He had a kidney and spleen transplant a few months ago and we thought he was going to be ok. Better than ok. Healthy again. Or close to it. But he got an infection and his body eventually succumbed to it.
He was only 42 years old

I found out last night at my show and when people asked me what was wrong I had to tell them that my friend died but "friend" seems like a lame and crippled word when it comes to describing what he was to me. He was someone I loved and admired more than I know how to explain.
He was a great man, an amazing pervert and a creative force to be reckoned with. One of the things that hurts so much about losing him is knowing some of the things he still wanted to create and knowing that they'll never happen now.

I wish I'd known him longer and I wish I'd known him better. The one time we played changed my life a little and I like to think it did the same for him. And I hate that it will never happen again. And I hate that I will never know his whole sordid life story or have another conversation with him. I am so so lucky to have shared a 10 panty evening with him, to have performed my most disturbing act for his birthday party, to have been under his straight razor.

Goodbye Flagg, thank you for everything. You will be sorely missed.

Recover

Wow. You know you're tired when you find yourself thinking
"I don't have to stand up to shower. It's really more of a guideline than a rule."

Last week was big busy ball of awesome. I performed in six shows, three of them on the same night and, while I'm exhausted, I couldn't be happier. Even the shows that were less fun I was really happy to be in. I'm still getting the hang of slipper room. It's a really different crowd than the one I'm used to. Their expectations are different, their reactions are different, and the show itself has a wildly different vibe. Also, I'm so used to performing in the dark I was wildly under glittered. I'm going to have to start bedazzling some of my costumes and/or building acts around the more glittery things in my wardrobe.

On top of performing I saw a solo show by one of my college acting teachers. The show itself was good, though it had some weak parts. It was performed in the theatre at my old studio, though, and the audience was almost completely filled with her current students and there was something about being there that made me overwhelmingly glad not to be doing theatre anymore. I mean, yes, technically this was a solo show, which is what I still do but there was something about the look and feel of being there. Maybe it was just the bad feelings I had anchored there. Or maybe it was the students talking about the same stupid shit I talked about in college as though it were the most important thing in the world and no one had ever talked about before. Or maybe it was the horrible lighting design (and it takes a LOT for me to notice bad lighting design) and the "we don't have money/creativity for an actual set but we want to make it look like we have a set so we'll borrow some realist bits of furniture and plunk them down in an empty space" set design. Whatever it was it made me really glad to be doing the work I'm doing and not trying to fit into that world.

Of course, this raises a few questions about the design of my upcoming solo show but...well, I'll finish the script first. But now I've learned; if you don't have the money/creativity for a set, don't have a set. If you can't design lights, a simple lights up, lights down will do the trick. Or, at the very least, program your crossfades so that they don't leave the actor in the dark during pivotal moments in the play.
The solo show's coming up on october 21st, by the way. Just sayin.

I also did a photo shoot the morning after the night of three shows. THAT was rough. I mean, once I was there and posing it was fun and I think the photos are going to be great. But dragging my tired ass through the process of waking up, putting on makeup and getting into manhattan was horrible. I swear, the moment someone makes an instant makeup box like the ones they have in the 5th Element I am buying one. I don't care how much they cost, I will find a way.

I also started teaching myself web design with a really old copy of dreamweaver (which I found in the book I bought the LAST time I decided to learn webdesign.) It's not easy but in three hours of fiddling around I managed to make something not hideous which, considering this was software I had never even looked at before, that's pretty damn good. If I can make a decent website for Mary Cyn but the end of the trial, I'll purchase a cheap copy of the software and continue in this vein. If not, I'll bite the bullet and start saving to pay a professional.

Oh! AND! Smitty and I saw Rasputina at the knitting factory and, as always, they rocked. This was the second smallest venue I'd ever seen them in and it felt really intimate and friendly. Unfortunately we had to leave early so I could get to a gig but they were recording the show and will be releasing it as a CD later this fall so I'll get to hear the rest. I really loved sharing the experience with Smitty and was really happy that he liked it, too. We don't have a lot of overlap in musical tastes so I was glad to have them overlap with one of my all time favorite bands.

Overall, it was great and if I keep being this busy I'll be ditching the day job in the not too distant future.

I totally rocked the Slipper Room!

Not only did my performances go smoothly (despite some technical difficulties) but I brought 60% of the audience and they were all awesome people that I love dearly and was delighted to see.
The booker said they'd be happy to have me back! Yay!
